Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, CA. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt was a nurse, who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned that art is a great vehicle for political activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to use the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. When she was a student DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house of a member on the jury. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired out of college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
